Description

The W 300 has an air-dried cone and a pressure-vented pole piece, and can be fitted from the front or the rear of the baffle, which helps when it is replacing the woofer in a finished hi-fi speaker. This 8 Ω version handles 120 W rated power, resonates at 32 Hz and has a mechanical excursion limit of ±14 mm, with 91 dB sensitivity.

Installation and cabinet guidance

Allow a 280 mm panel opening for a 305 mm frame, with 5.5 mm fixing holes on a 293 mm circle. Behind the panel the driver needs about 120 mm of clear depth for the basket and the 120 mm magnet, with room beyond that for the terminals and the wiring.

At 2.8 kg this is a heavy driver, so mount it on a rigid, well braced baffle with a continuous gasket or sealing strip between the frame and the panel, and tighten the fixings evenly and only enough to seal so the frame is not distorted. With ±14 mm of travel available, check that the cone and the surround stay clear of the grille and of any internal bracing at full excursion. The terminals take 4.8 x 0.8 mm blades on the positive side and 2.8 x 0.8 mm on the negative, so blade width identifies polarity; observe it and use an amplifier or crossover suited to the 8 Ω load.

Visaton's published enclosure suggestions for this driver: 70 l closed (fc 62 Hz, Qtc 0.87); 100 l closed (fc 55 Hz, Qtc 0.77); 150 l closed (fc 48 Hz, Qtc 0.68); 70 l bass reflex with one BR 25.50 port cut to 7 cm (fb 36 Hz); 100 l bass reflex with one BR 25.50 port cut to 20 cm (fb 32 Hz); 150 l bass reflex with two BR 15.34 ports cut to 7 cm (fb 29 Hz).

It can be mounted from the front or the rear of the baffle, which helps in a replacement. Before ordering, check the cut-out, the fixing pattern, the depth behind the panel and the impedance against the original driver.
