Description

The EX 60 XWP is an electrodynamic exciter with no cone of its own: it sets a panel vibrating in bending waves so that the panel radiates the sound. It is built into a sealed waterproof plastic housing, rated IP65, with a 1.5 m supply cable, and the manufacturer lists it as suitable for outdoor applications. This 8 Ω version takes 25 W maximum long-term power (DIN EN 60268-5).

Installation and cabinet guidance

The EX 60 XWP is built into a sealed plastic housing 67 x 75 mm and 28 mm deep, with four 4.2 mm fixing holes on 57 x 65 mm centres and a 1.5 m cable (5.2 mm diameter) leaving through a gland. Fix the housing solidly to a clean, flat, rigid area of the panel, either with screws through the four holes or with a suitable adhesive; the matching adhesive pad is Pad EX 60 XWP (part 4558), 3M VHB 4919F. Clean and degrease the area first, and press the housing down evenly over its whole base.

The sound comes from the panel, so its material, size, shape and fixing decide the result, and no frequency response or sensitivity is published for the exciter on its own. Light, rigid, non-magnetic panels work best, and a position slightly off centre usually gives good results. Test positions with ordinary double-sided tape before fixing permanently, keep other objects from touching the panel, and expect less bass when the panel hangs close to a wall. The housing is rated IP65 and the manufacturer lists the unit as suitable for outdoor applications; make the cable's connection to the amplifier where it stays dry, and use a drip loop where the cable is exposed.

Connect the two cable leads to the amplifier, keeping the polarity consistent between units. Any normal amplifier suitable for an 8 Ω load will drive it; keep the drive within the 25 W maximum long-term power (DIN EN 60268-5). Route the cable so that it cannot rattle against the panel, and leave enough slack that it cannot pull on the gland. Operating temperature range −25 to 70 °C.
