Description

The W 170 is a straightforward, good-value 17 cm woofer for simple two-way speakers, car rear tray installations and replacement duty in finished hi-fi speakers. This 8 Ω version takes 40 W rated power, resonates at 57 Hz, gives 87 dB sensitivity from a 25 mm voice coil and has a mechanical excursion limit of ±7.5 mm.

Installation and cabinet guidance

Allow a 146 mm panel opening for a 170 mm frame, with the fixing holes on a 159 mm circle as 5 x 7 mm slots. Behind the panel the driver needs about 63 mm of clear depth for the basket and the 80 mm magnet, with room beyond that for the terminals and the wiring. The slots give a little adjustment, so mark them from the driver itself rather than working to a nominal pitch.

Mount it on a rigid baffle with a continuous gasket or sealing strip between the frame and the panel, and tighten the fixings evenly and only enough to seal so the frame is not pulled out of shape. Keep the cone and the surround clear of the grille and of any internal bracing. The terminals take 4.8 x 0.8 mm blades on the positive side and 2.8 x 0.8 mm on the negative, so blade width identifies polarity; observe it and use an amplifier or crossover suited to the 8 Ω load.

The lower cut-off depends on the enclosure volume and tuning, so test the driver in the intended enclosure at the intended listening level before finalising the cabinet.

If it is going in as a replacement, check the cut-out, the fixing pattern, the depth behind the panel and the impedance against the original driver before ordering. On a car rear tray, also check that the space behind the panel stays clear once the boot is loaded.
