Description

The SL 87 WPM is a compact 8 cm full-range speaker with a transparent plastic cone and rubber sealing ring, optimised for voice and signal output. It is rated IP65 and IPX8 at the front when built into a sealed enclosure (IPX8 at 1 m water depth for 18.5 h). This UV- and weather-resistant 4 Ω version handles 20 W and gives a high 89 dB (1 W/1 m).

Installation and cabinet guidance

Allow for an 80 mm panel opening. The frame is 83 mm square with an open 5 mm slot at each corner on a 100 mm circle for the fixings; mark them from the unit itself rather than assuming the spacing. The unit is 29 mm deep overall, with an 85.5 mm basket and a 60 mm magnet, so allow room behind the panel for the terminals and the wiring.

The IP65 and IPX8 protection applies to the front of the driver only, and only when it is built into a sealed enclosure; the rear is open to the enclosure. The IPX8 rating is the manufacturer's test at 1 m water depth for 18.5 h, under the same front-side condition. Compress the rubber sealing ring evenly against a flat panel and protect the rear from water and dust; bonding the driver in and fitting a front cover or grille may be needed to complete the protection. Tighten the fixings evenly so the frame is not distorted, and run the cable so that water cannot track along it into the enclosure. A matching protective grille, part 4639, is available. Operating temperature range −40 to 70 °C.

Connect to the 2.8 x 0.5 mm (+)/2.8 x 0.5 mm (-) blade terminals with matching push-on connectors and observe polarity; both blades are the same size, so identify the positive terminal before you fit the connectors. Use an amplifier suitable for the 4 Ω load and keep the drive within the 20 W rating (30 W maximum).

This is the 4 Ω version; the 8 Ω version is part 2088. Check the impedance against the amplifier and the installation before ordering.
