Description

The FX 16 WP is a saltwater-resistant two-way coaxial speaker with a moulded plastic cone, basket and grille, and a central tweeter in its compass-rose grille. It is corrosion-resistant and waterproof thanks to the encased magnet and silicone-coated leads, and rated IP65 at the front when built into a sealed enclosure. This white 4 Ω speaker handles 80 W and comes as a pair with gasket and mounting template.

Installation and cabinet guidance

Allow for a 142 mm panel opening. The round flange is 180 mm in diameter with four 4.5 mm fixing holes, countersunk to 7.8 mm, on a 167 mm circle; mark them from the unit itself rather than assuming the spacing. Behind the panel allow about 50 mm for the 142 mm basket and its 79.5 mm magnet cup, plus room for the terminals and the wiring; the domed grille stands about 21 mm proud of the panel, so allow for that behind any fascia or trim. A mounting template and a gasket are supplied with the pair; use the template to set out the opening and the fixings.

The IP65 protection applies to the front of the speaker only, and only when it is built into a sealed enclosure; the rear is open to the enclosure. Fit the supplied gasket between the flange and the panel and protect the rear from water and dust; bonding the speaker in and fitting a front cover or grille may be needed to complete the protection. Fit the gasket dry and tighten the fixings evenly so the flange is not distorted. Run the cable so that water cannot track along it into the enclosure, and leave a drip loop where it is exposed. Operating temperature range −40 to 80 °C.

Connect to the 4.8 x 0.8 mm (+)/2.8 x 0.8 mm (-) blade terminals with matching push-on connectors and observe polarity; the blades differ in width, so the wider blade identifies the positive. Use an amplifier suitable for the 4 Ω load and keep the drive within the 80 W rating (100 W maximum). For a 100 V line system, connect through a suitable line transformer; do not connect the speaker directly to the line.

Supplied as a pair. The tweeter sits at the centre of the compass-rose grille, and each speaker connects to the amplifier through its single pair of terminals as a 4 Ω unit; plan both cable runs before you cut the openings.
